Get ready, baseball fans! The Philadelphia Phillies are gearing up to chase another World Series title as they prepare for the start of spring training in February.
On a recent Thursday, Major League Baseball unveiled the initial schedule for spring training workouts, which includes important dates for pitchers, catchers, and position players across the league, including our very own Phillies.
Currently, the Phillies are making headlines as they pursue free-agent slugger Bo Bichette. Their spring training will take place at their Clearwater, Florida facility, which also serves as home to their Class-A team, the Clearwater Threshers. Fans can look forward to all home games being held at BayCare Ballpark.
As the excitement builds, Philadelphia is set to kick off its regular season at home against the Texas Rangers on March 26. This series will feature three games against the Rangers, followed by a showdown with the Washington Nationals for another three games.
Key Dates for Phillies Spring Training
Mark your calendars! The initial reporting date for Philadelphia's pitchers and catchers is February 11, with their first workout scheduled for that day. Position players will follow closely behind, reporting for their first workout on February 16, as confirmed by MLB.com.
However, there’s a notable absence this spring: Ranger Suarez, who recently signed a free-agent deal with the Boston Red Sox, will not be joining the squad. In his absence, the starting rotation will be led by Zack Wheeler, Cristopher Sánchez, Jesús Luzardo, and Aaron Nola. It’s worth noting that Wheeler's availability for opening day is uncertain. Excitingly, top prospect Andrew Painter is expected to contend seriously for a spot in the rotation.
In the bullpen, look out for closer Jhoan Duran as he embarks on his first spring training with the Phillies. He'll be joined by new bullpen additions Brad Keller and Zach Pop. Notably, starting catcher J.T. Realmuto remains a free agent, but if he secures a contract before training begins, he will report as well.
Should Bichette sign with the team, he would join the other position players in Clearwater when they report. This offseason, the Phillies made a significant move by signing slugger Adolis García to a one-year contract. Additionally, they retained Kyle Schwarber, while top prospect Justin Crawford is anticipated to step into the role of starting center fielder.
The Phillies' spring training schedule officially kicks off on February 21 with a game against the Toronto Blue Jays. The next day, fans can catch the Phillies hosting the Pittsburgh Pirates at BayCare Park.
An exciting highlight of the spring training slate is an exhibition game on March 4, where the Phillies will face off against Team Canada in preparation for the World Baseball Classic, which commences later that week.
Moreover, the Phillies' top prospects will participate in two spring breakout games: the first against the Minnesota Twins at their facility on March 19, followed by a matchup against the Blue Jays' top prospects just two days later.
Finally, the Phillies will wrap up their spring training on March 23 with a home game against the Tampa Bay Rays. After this final match, the team will break camp and have just two days before they launch into the regular season.
